Beyoncé and Madonna are among the more than 100 big names in music, film and television who will take part in “Hope for Haiti Now: A Global Benefit for Earthquake Relief,” a two-hour telethon on Friday night to be broadcast around the world on television and online.
The show, which in the United States will begin at 8 p.m. Eastern time on all the major networks, as well as on CNN, HBO, MTV, TNT, Showtime and other cable channels, will feature musical performances filmed in multiple locations: Bruce Springsteen, Sting, Shakira and Wyclef Jean will play in New York; while in London, Bono and the Edge of U2 will collaborate with Jay-Z and Rihanna, with Coldplay also slated to perform; the program in Los Angeles will include performances by Stevie Wonder, Taylor Swift, Justin Timberlake, and a collaboration among Keith Urban, Kid Rock and Sheryl Crow. Online, the event can be watched on YouTube, Hulu, MySpace, MSN.com and Yahoo, among other sites.
Songs from the telethon will be for sale on iTunes for 99 cents beginning Saturday, will all proceeds going to a number of relief organizations, including the Clinton Bush Haiti Fund, the United Nations World Food Program, Oxfam America, the Red Cross, Unicef and the Yele Haiti Foundation.
Friday’s telethon looks to be the biggest charity event since the 2005 telethon for victims of Hurricane Katrina — “Shelter From the Storm: A Concert tor the Gulf Coast,” drew 22.1 million viewers and raised $30 million for the Salvation Army and the Red Cross.
Also on Thursday, Simon Cowell announced that he would release a charity single to raise money for the victims of the Haiti earthquakes, the Associated Press reported. Mr. Cowell is expected to recruit stars signed to his company, including the British singers Susan Boyle and Leona Lewis, as well as United States musicians to record the single.
