Madonna has joined other celebrities like Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, who have used their fame and fortune to help those devastated in Haiti by Tuesday’s 7.0-magnitude earthquake. The disaster claimed 45,000 to 50,000 lives, according to the Red Cross, which just received a reported $1.5 million from model Gisele Bundchen.
Today, Madonna announced she donated $250,000 to Partners In Health, a health care provider in Haiti.
In a statement, Madonna said, “My prayers are with the people of Haiti. I can’t imagine the terrible pain and suffering they are experiencing. Sadly the depths of the tragedy are just becoming known and the need for our support grows more urgent with every passing moment.”
And to help support Haiti, Madonna asked friends and the general public “to join me collectively to match my contribution or give in any way you can.”
She added, ”we must act now.”
And we must.
Next week, Hollywood will come together to help Haiti in a telethon, being organized by George Clooney, that’s going to air on the MTV networks, NBC, ABC, HBO, and CNN.
